Our 5-Gallon Heritage New White Oak Bourbon & Whiskey Aging Barrel is made for people who want to age spirits the traditional way—not in a decorative mini barrel covered in lacquer and drilled full of unnecessary holes.

These barrels are professionally coopered from brand-new white oak by one of the largest professional cooperages in the country. They’re built with quality materials and traditional barrel construction for serious home distillers, whiskey makers, bourbon enthusiasts, and small-batch spirit aging.

One of the biggest differences between our Heritage barrels and many small barrels you’ll find online is simple:

We don’t lacquer them.

A quality aging barrel needs to retain the natural characteristics of the wood. Oak is porous, and traditional barrel maturation involves interaction among the spirit, wood, oxygen, and surrounding environment. That’s why our Heritage barrels have a natural, unfinished exterior—no lacquer, varnish, or decorative clear coat sealing the outside of the oak.

A shiny barrel might look good sitting on a shelf. We would rather sell you a barrel designed around aging what’s inside it.

Why No Spigot?

We intentionally do not install a spigot in our Heritage aging barrels.

Every hole drilled through a barrel creates another potential point for leakage. Instead, these barrels use a simple bung opening, reducing unnecessary penetrations through the oak and keeping the barrel closer to traditional aging-barrel construction.

Want a spigot? You can install one yourself. But we’re not drilling another hole into a quality new white oak barrel unless you decide you want one.

Why No Stand?

The barrel is sold without a stand, helping keep you from paying for accessories you may not need. Barrel stands will be available separately for customers who want one.

Why Choose a 5-Gallon Aging Barrel?

A 5-gallon white oak barrel is a great middle ground for serious small-batch spirit aging. You get substantially more capacity than the smallest countertop barrels while maintaining a greater wood-to-spirit ratio than a traditional full-size commercial bourbon barrel.

That makes it an excellent option for experimenting with bourbon-style spirits, whiskey, corn whiskey, rye whiskey, moonshine, rum, brandy, and other barrel-aged spirits.

Because smaller barrels generally extract oak character faster than full-size commercial barrels, don’t simply fill it and forget about it. Sample your spirit periodically and let flavor—not just the calendar—tell you when it’s ready.

Before First Use: A new oak barrel should be properly prepared and swelled with water before filling with spirit. Check for leaks and allow the staves and heads to swell and seal naturally before beginning your aging process.
