Create a bold, aromatic absinthe-style spirit using a traditional combination of classic botanicals.

This 5-Gallon Absinthe Botanical Distilling Kit contains the botanicals needed for the complete process—from the initial maceration through distillation and final coloring.

The botanical blend features the classic foundation of wormwood, fennel seed, and anise seed, along with star anise for an additional anise character during the run. Lemon balm and hyssop are supplied separately for the traditional post-distillation coloring step.

How It Works

Begin with approximately 5 gallons of your own spirit, adjusted to your desired starting proof. Add the wormwood, fennel seed, anise seed, and angelica root to the spirit and allow the botanicals to macerate for approximately one week.

After maceration, thoroughly strain or filter the liquid to remove the botanical material before transferring the liquid to your still.

During distillation, place the supplied 3–4 star anise pods in the thumper to add another layer of aromatic anise character.

After distillation and proofing, the finished spirit can be naturally colored using the included lemon balm and hyssop.

For each 1-quart mason jar of finished spirit, start with:

2 tablespoons lemon balm
1 teaspoon hyssop

Allow the herbs to infuse until the desired color and botanical character are achieved, then thoroughly filter them from the spirit.

The finished color can be left completely natural or, if desired, a small amount of food-grade green coloring can be added for a brighter traditional green appearance.
