White Oak Age-in-a-Jar Aging Blocks – Medium Char
Want the character of charred American white oak without filling an entire barrel?
Our White Oak Age-in-a-Jar Aging Blocks give home distillers and spirit enthusiasts a simple way to oak-age small batches right in a Mason jar.
We start with real American white oak, cut it into small aging blocks, then dehydrate the wood for approximately 24 hours to remove excess moisture. Each piece is then medium charred, creating the toasted and charred surface that interacts with your spirit during aging.
Simply add one or two pieces to a quart Mason jar, fill it with your spirit, seal the jar, and give the oak time to work.
We recommend aging at approximately 120 proof for great extraction and flavor development, although you can experiment with the proof that works best for the spirit and flavor profile you’re trying to create.
How Long Should You Age It?
For the best results, we recommend giving your spirit approximately 8 weeks on the oak.
Can you taste it sooner? Absolutely—and we know plenty of people aren’t going to stare at a jar of whiskey for two months without getting curious.
Sample it periodically and watch the color and flavor develop. The longer it sits, the more opportunity the spirit has to pull character from the charred white oak. When it tastes right to you, it’s ready.
Because small pieces of oak provide considerably more wood surface area relative to the amount of spirit than a traditional full-size barrel, flavor and color can develop much faster. Check it regularly to avoid over-oaking.
Enough Oak for Multiple Batches
Each package contains enough medium-char white oak to age at least 2 gallons of spirits, depending on how much oak you choose to use in each jar.
Use them with moonshine, corn whiskey, bourbon-style spirits, rye, whiskey, rum, brandy, or your own experimental recipes.
They’re especially handy for experimenting. Split a batch between several jars and try different proofs, aging times, recipes, or finishing methods without risking several gallons at once.
Suggested Use
Add 1–2 medium-char white oak blocks per quart of spirit. We recommend starting around 120 proof, sealing the jar tightly, and storing it away from direct sunlight. Allow approximately 8 weeks for best results, tasting periodically as the spirit develops.
There isn’t a magic date when whiskey suddenly becomes finished. Color is interesting, but flavor is what matters.
Simple. Reusable-sized batches. Real charred white oak.
Age a jar. Taste the difference. Then try to leave the dang thing alone for eight weeks. 😆
